Standing Firm on the Road to Reform
Rich Umbdenstock, AHA President and CEO
“Be sure you put your feet in the right place, then stand firm.” -- Abraham Lincoln
Lincoln was elected president 149 years ago today, and while his words were aimed at the great reform effort of his time, they also resonate for hospital leaders today. In the great reform effort of our time, the hospital field has indeed stood firm for health care reform legislation that covers all Americans. As the storms of controversy pushed through town hall meetings, TV talk shows and political debate, we continued to stand firm, working to improve the legislation so that it helps us improve people’s lives. The House is expected to vote tomorrow, and politics is in full swing as House leaders scurry to round up the 218 votes they need to ensure passage. If they don’t, the vote could be put off. Meanwhile, Senate leaders await word on just how much their bill will cost … and how many people it will cover. Two things are certain: The road ahead is still long, with action possibly continuing into next year; and we will continue to heed Lincoln’s advice until the very end.
